My aquarium water got white and cloudy after I added the salt. Is that a bacteria bloom? Does it leave a film?

I have a 55 gallon tank, I added salt, then the sg was too high, so i put more fresh water to get it down. After 2 days, the water was white and cloudy. It has cleared a bit now and lefta white film over the tank will the film go away? It's really hard to scrub the white film off. I don't have live sand or rock in the tank yet. It does have a filter and thermometer at 79 degrees. I have kept the light off so as not to promote algae growth. My aquarium water got white and cloudy after I added the salt. What type of salt did you use synthetic or real sea salts? While there is an endothermic reaction that takes place with the water (in short the freezing/boiling point goes down) salt also affects the chemistry of water. Espeially on minerals that are in the water.

Salt for a salt tank should be premixed in buckets allowed to dissolve and then placed into the tank. Once you have fish, you will have to do it this way to avoid shock and salt burns on your fish.

More than likely undissolved salt is suspeded in your water.

This can happen (called Vapor pressure). The film itself if it is a synthetic salt will often line the tank like a lime coating. Your live sand should already be in the tank prior to filling. You are going to go thru another suspension of debris when you do finally add sand.

Usually using a tank magnet or tank scrubber and a little elbo greese will work to remove this layerMy aquarium water got white and cloudy after I added the salt. Is that a bacteria bloom? Does it leave a film?
when setting up a saltwater tank you shpuld mix the salt and water before adding to tank. the film should go away and also it would have been easier to put live sand before you fill up the tank wich will prolly make the water cloudy as well.

this website is a very good place to start
