Will my gerber daisy bloom again next year if I take care of it?

If live in southern California, maybe you could put it outside

Otherwise, to keep it alive indoors, you would need VERY bright lights. I find the lightbulbs designed for people who are sensitive to light levels in the winter and fabulous for my plants. They imitate natural light. Any bulb like that would be suitable

Plants indoors have low light (from a plants point of view) and plants that can survive low light just fine, may none the less not bloom, because bloom requires very bright light.

Orlando Bloom Biography

Born on January 13, 1977 in Canterbury, England, Orlando Bloom's plans of becoming an actor developed quite early when he realized that the characters on TV and in the movies weren't real, that they were actors. ';Once I realized that I could be Superman or I could be The Hustler or I could be Daniel Day Lewis's character in The Last Of The Mohicans - I was like, ';Man, I can become an actor and be all of those things.'; In 1993, he moved to London to improve his career, doing bit parts in TV series like ';Casualty';. Orlando spent two years at the National Youth Theatre before getting a scholarship to train with the British American Drama Academy. His first memorable appearance, a cameo in the critically acclaimed movie Wilde in 1997, earned him various film offers, which he all turned down in favor to play theatre. After Wilde, Orlando attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for 3 years. On stage, he appeared in plays like ';The Seagull';, ';Twelfth Night';, and ';Trojan Women';.

Orlando's first major movie role was in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, playing the ethereal elf Legolas Greenleaf, a role he received only days before graduating drama school in London. Two years later, when The Fellowship of the Ring premiered, audiences were in instant awe of the blonde haired, blue eyed elf with killer cheek bones, who was also handy with a bow and arrow. It didn't take long for Orlando to become a full fledged teen heartthrob, hailed by magazines as ';The next big thing';. In interviews and magazines, fans discovered that off-screen, Orlando was quite different than his movie counterpart. With brown eyes, dark hair, olive skin, and a keen yet quirky fashion sense, he looked right at home on the cover of GQ. Unlike the quiet Legolas, Orlando was full of energy and infectious enthusiasm, charming everyone he worked with, along with the fans. In interviews, he described himself as an adrenaline junky; skydiving, bungee jumping, surfing and snowboarding in his spare time. This live life to it's fullest concept seems to come partly from a brush with death that Orlando had while in drama school. Falling 3 stories from a friend's roof terrace, Orlando faced the possibility of never walking again, but was able to walk out of the hospital 12 days later.

A walking miracle, Orlando seemed to be on the road to mega-stardom. Released shortly after the The Fellowship of the Ring was the gritty war drama, Black Hawk Down, directed by Ridley Scott. Orlando played Private First Class Todd Blackburn, and showed the enthusiasm, excitement and nervousness of an 18 year old soldier new to the world of war in Somalia. Shadowing a real life experience, his character falls from a helicopter and breaks his back. His next role was that of Joe Byrne in Ned Kelly, a historical biopic of the infamous Australian outlaw. Even though the movie had a limited release, the reviews were positive for Orlando's portrayal of Ned Kelly's right hand man. Next came the swashbuckling blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, which cemented Orlando's place as the action movie ';It Boy';. Playing the dashing yet straight-laced blacksmith, Will Turner, Orlando won even more hearts by showing off his sword fighting skills alongside his idol, Johnny Depp, while romancing the film's heroine played by Keira Knightley. In 2004 came another period action movie, Troy. Although the role of Paris saw Orlando again using a sword and bow, it was a departure from his past roles. Paris was an anti-hero, young and foolish at times, sacrificing all for love. Also released in 2004, although only limited in Europe, was the indie film The Calcium Kid, a mockumentary comedy about a milkman who becomes a boxer. Orlando was able to show off his comedic skills while playing a modern character, with no weapons or costumes. The indie film Haven also made its debut at the 2004 Toronto Film Festival. Orlando both starred in and co-produced the film. It has yet to be released into theaters.

Orlando's first starring role in a major production was in Kingdom of Heaven, released in 2005. Although the film was considered a box office disappointment, the reviews of Orlando's acting were positive. He was able to convey the inner turmoil of a man on a journey of spiritual and self discovery. Orlando's next starring role will be that of Drew Baylor in Elizabethtown. A modern comedic drama written and directed by Cameron Crowe. A sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean titled Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest will be released in Summer 2006.

Although Orlando has grown since his premiere in The Lord of the Rings, he still has the same genuine love of life and work. He likes to keep his family and friends out of the li

We would like to come in MarchWhen is the best springtime to see the desert in bloom?
Late February through early June. Peak season is usually April or early May depending upon how much rain we have had during the winter and early spring. You will see different blooms at different times... Enjoy!!When is the best springtime to see the desert in bloom?

The desert doesn't bloom all at once, it goes in shorts and spurts throughout the year. The Botanical Garden has a nice bit on it. Bring light, breathy clothes, it'll be in the 90s.

    When do lilies bloom?

I'm not sure what kind of lily I have planted... I think it is pink %26amp; white.

The plant is about 4 feet tall %26amp; has lots of buds on them, but they're not blooming. Does anyone know what time of year they bloom? When do lilies bloom?
Different lilies bloom at different times of the year. My Easter lilies just came into bloom this week, and if your's have buds then they should bloom shortly. When do lilies bloom?
Daylilies bloom throughout the summer and into fall. Give it some time to get accustomed to it's new home. Water every other day (1 gal) and throw a small scoop of a balanced plant food into the water once a week until it blooms.

Cut back the feeding to once a month after it starts blooming.
my lilies bloomed in the spring, now I have bubs on them again so they'll be blooming soon,so will yours,so be a little patient, and you will have some nice flowers in your garden.
I'm sure then very shortly its going to bloom. Just wait.
Sounds as if you have Asian lilies, usually a spring bloomer. But if you have buds, you will have blooms in a few days.

My 2 year old tea rose bush did not bloom the 2nd year .......why?

I bought a beautiful rose bush in the spring of 2007 ,it had really beautiful rose that year. I cut it back in the fall did not mulch and come spring it took its time with any kind of foilage. Then something strange happened,a new sprout came up in a total different area of the base and grew with leaves to about 3 inches. Alas, one little rose came up.Eventually ,the stems in the old base spot came up ,but no flowers all summer. What happened? My 2 year old tea rose bush did not bloom the 2nd year .......why?
Roses are gross feeders and need lots of fertilizer, moisture and sun to do well.

If you haven't fertilized, do this with a rose food such as sudden impact, if your not watering make sure it gets a regular deep water, and if it isn't getting any sun move it to a sunnier position.

If you have cut it back too far, it may take some time to recover. Roses grow 'water shoots' to renew the shrub. Completely new branches grow from the bottom each year and the roses grow on the top of these. If you have cut the plant back so hard, or it has died back you may only have the root stock left. If the rose was the same as the original purchased plant this is not the case. If the rose that flowered was different - Dr Huey is a single dark crimson than that is from the root stock. Cut any stems from below the graft completely off.

You won't be able to see what is happening till you revitalize the bush. Don't despair, treat with TLC and wait and see what happens.

Good luck. My 2 year old tea rose bush did not bloom the 2nd year .......why?
If a rose does well the first year then it usually does well from then on unless a winter damages it. I wonder if the winter killed the top graft and now you have the understock growing. The understock is usually a climber called Dr. Huey and it is a semi double red rose. What happens is that when a winter kills part of the main rose this gives the very vigorous understock a change to grow and because it is so vigorous it will in time make the main rose so weak it will die off the next cold winter. To see what rose is growing, take a trowel and pull the soil away from the base and if the canes are coming from above the union bump then it is the main one. If they are growing out from below the bump, it will be the understock. The chances of bring back the main on are slim if it is the understock that is growing. You would have to tear (not cut) the long canes off at the base so it forms a wound and then they won't come back. Hope this helps

    What flowers bloom year round?

    Tropical species, usually.

Though perennials return year after year, they usually don't bloom more than twice in a season. Those which find themselves under snow don't usually bloom at that time............What flowers bloom year round?
The ones that dont die :-)What flowers bloom year round?
Most tropical plants will, though if you live in a temperate zone none will, since they lose their leaves in the winter. If you are just talking about the summer growing season, then I would recomend butterfly bush. If you live in a tropical zone try any kind of lotus if the soil is very wet.
Vincas, they're wonderful plants. Very easy to take care of.
if you live in zone 10 anything will bloom year around...in zone 9 maybe a few.....below that is zero plants year around.
    SUNFLOWER
perennials grow year round. Check out www.perennials.com for your garden options
    Dandelions
    marigolds, roses.......depending on your climate
I don't know where you live but, I live in zone 9. I grow lots and lots of flowers. Many bloom most of the time but, petunias never give up. Plant them in intervals.
Rather than flowers try a few smallish flowering shrubs that have random flushes of flowers year-round.

That way you still get good foliage and the plant doesn't get as daggy looking!
    It depends where you live!

When I lived in Arizona my Vincas had flowers all year long.
For me, hibiscus and pentas mostly in zone 9.

This year, North America has experienced far more warmth than any other ever recorded. It's playing havok with all sorts of creatures. The Canada Geese are still in the North, Horses and other furry animals have already shed thier winter coats... it's going to be disatrous.
i have one too, and it got tons of blooms on it this year, cause i kept it in my sunny sunroom/dining room i have. but that room gets colder in winter, and i think the cold started making my blooms fall off, so next yr. i will for sure bring it to the warmer spot of the house.....last year i kept it in the warmer spots.
Christmas cactus NEVER bloomed for me, until I moved to a place where they had a 'cool' but EXTREMELY SUNNY southern 'view' ... and then they bloomed like CRAZY. But, they did it in 'alternating years' ... so if you got NO blooms, but you have it in a sunny spot, then it may be 'done forever' ... keep it and try again next year ... and get another one that did bloom this year ... that way you'll probably get one of them to bloom EVERY year, alternating... but if it doesn't bloom for five years then 'put it out to pasture' or give it to someone who loves it without the blossoms, because it may just be 'too old' ...

    Day Lillies only bloom once?

Illinois, do day lillies need full sun to bloom after the first time? I get them in spring, but they don't repeat bloom. i tried to thin them out also.Day Lillies only bloom once?
    zocko,

Some daylilies bloom only once. Others can bloom multiple times. While still others are deciduous. So when you are picking out daylilies, don't take it for granted that they all do the same thing.

Most people want evergreen, multiple blooming or everblooming daylilies.Day Lillies only bloom once?
Yes, one bloom lasts only one day. You have to dead-head all the spent blooms to get it to create more blooms. These are not true lillies, they just look like lillies. Their root system does not consist of bulbs.

You may have to cull the bed, too.

Check your growing Zone, go to your local nursery and get advice on soil conditions, and be careful on what you grow besidie them because different groups of plants need different soil conditions.
Daylillies only bloom once per season. But have numerous flowers, hence the name day lillies
Mine were half in the shade and half the day in the sun. They bloomed once but then the other buds would bloom all spring and summer. Do you apply more potting soil around then in the spring. They need to be fertilize too and I usre alittle miracle grow on mine..Have you gone to a nursery and ask them. Good Luck to you!!!
My Day Lillies only bloom once. They are in mostly afternoon sun.

I pick the flowers when they are spent and put them in the fridge until I have enough for a meal. They are edible and can be sauteed in butter with salt and pepper. They taste good and if you have enough plants you could have a good meal out of them (side dish).

An after thought....... make sure your plants are the edible kind.

Last september i planted lilly bulbs , are they gauranteed to bloom this spring?

Most lillies do not bloom in the spring--not when daffodils and tulips bloom. They bloom later. There are very few guarantees in life.

over time a good lawer should build up on it's own.. your tap water probably has traces of phosphates and nitrates, both will cause algea growth

worse comes to worse, you can buy some nori from an ethnic/japanese grocery storeHow do i get an algae bloom than is controlable?
Yeah if you keep your tank in any amount of light, it should start to grow. A huge patch emerged on my plastic one when it came through a bulletproof window.

    Why won't my daffodils bloom?

I transplanted some daffodils and now they won't bloom. They come up, but don't get any flowers. What could be the problem? Why won't my daffodils bloom?
Has this happened numerous years, or just one year? Sometimes, bulbs don't bloom the first year they are transplanted. If they were very crowded before you moved them, and a lot of the bulbs were quite small (these small bulbs are called ';offsets';), then the bulbs may need a year of growth before they are ';bloom-size'; bulbs. But they almost always bloom from the second year on, as long as you leave the green leaves on the plant until it dies back naturally so the bulb can get ready for next year. Why won't my daffodils bloom?
Do you cut off the leaves when they start looking bad? Let them stay on until they dry up because the leaves feed the bulb. You might try fertilizing them.

Also you may have transplanted them when they weren't dormant and disrupted their cycle.

I think she took way too many baths.

I'm looking for some really unusual and eye catching flowers to plant which will bloom in the heat of summer.

I'd like to have blooms in late July and August. My flower garden seems to peter out after spring and early summer. Any Ideas?I'm looking for some really unusual and eye catching flowers to plant which will bloom in the heat of summer.
You didn't say what your gardening zone is. I'm a zone 6a and some of my gardens most unique blooms are in the fall. I have turtlehead, monkshood, toadlilies and great blue lobelia. Also, the tall candlelabra type blooms of snakeroot is awesome. All but the toadlily are native plants.I'm looking for some really unusual and eye catching flowers to plant which will bloom in the heat of summer.
red hot pokers are vivid and unusual looking also canna lilys bloom up til frost and are a great addition for late summer blooms. i've seen red, orange and yellow ones. hummingbirds love the red ones. late summer is a good time for mums and annuals such as marigolds and zinnias
    Russian Sage

    Coreopsis

    Echinacea

    Leucanthemum

    Gallardia
My two favorites are nasturtium and hibiscus. Hibiscus comes in a few varieties. When I checked my local greenhouse they had shrub, tree and tropical varieties. I advise you to check into flowers that grow best in tropical climates. You want something that grows best in the heat of the summer. Impatients bloom like crazy at this time but they are not very unusual. Although you can get them in a variety of brilliant colors.
I have a nice stand of dahlias that are really coming on nicely as are the galdiolos and the canas. This is the first year I tried hibiscus. The plants are getting big but no blossoms yet.

    Good luck with your choice.
Black-eyed Susan (perennial). Zinnias (short or tall). Cosmos. Marigolds. Cleome. Hibiscus.

    Why won't my wisteria bloom?

We planted a Wisteria a couple years ago from a nursery...no idea specifically what kind unfortunately. It was small but did get a few thin strands of light purple flowers the first year. It's year 3 0r 4 and nothing since. The plant has grown very big and covered the arbor. We've trimmed watered fertilized according to things we've read but no flowers:-(!Why won't my wisteria bloom?
I speak from experience.....we help our next door neighbor cut back his wisteria right after it blooms in the spring to make it bloom the following year. It works every time. We cut it back by as much as 1/3 to 1/2. It RECOVERS quickly. LOL! But it can also be cut back a couple of feet from the tip ends right after it blooms in the spring if you don't want to be so drastic. It blooms heavily every spring and is a beautiful green the rest of the summer.

One year the wisteria kept hitting our neighbor in the face while he was mowing, he got mad and cut it all the way to the ground. The next spring it was so heavy with flowers that you could not see the branches. It was absolutely beautiful! If we had one in our yard, I would cut it to the ground right after it blooms every spring. And like I said above, they recover quickly and are pretty all summer long.

If your lawn fertilizer is washing over into the soil of your wisteria, it will not bloom. Lawn fertilizer will cause pretty green leaves, but no flowers not only on the wisteria but any flower or shrub.

You can do the same with honeysuckles and trumpet vines.

    ------------

    2006 added to the above:

Hello there, if you live where there is little rain fall, you will not have trouble with your wisteria growing out of bounds. But if you live where you have plenty of rain each year, your wisteria will be hard to control. We live in the southwest's semi-desert, our next door neighbor's wisteria gives us no problems at all. It has stayed the same size for over twenty years.

Another thing you can do is plant them in BIG, BIG, BIG containers. Be sure to have something strong that they can climb on such as a metal trellis that is in the ground beside the container. They do get heavy.

If it gets too wild, you can cut wisteria to the ground and it will come back for you the next year.

Information so you will grow a beautiful tree:

    (from: http://www.traxfarms.com/info_tips/nurse鈥?/a> )

    ';Wisteria

Wisteria is a pretty carefree grower. It can be stubborn with its bloom, but when it does bloom it is spectacular. This plant must have sun, less than full sun retards flowering. All wisteria need well-drained soil that has been loosened at least 2 feet down; this gives the roots room to sprawl. If the soil is poor, add sand for drainage, compost or peat moss to lighten the texture. When planting, position the plant so the graft is above the soil line. Keep the new plants well watered until new growth begins and never let them dry out.

Wisteria is a heavy vine that needs a sturdy trellis or arbor. The trunks can be manually twisted or braided and the rapid growth of the vines makes twisting and training easy. Position the vines in place, stake, and tie with a soft cord.

Wisteria grows quickly and can live for decades. It will survive almost anywhere, but getting it to flower is not easy. Fertilize in late spring with a high phosphate fertilizer around the base of the trunk. Do not use a high nitrogen fertilizer; this promotes new vegetative growth and fewer flowers. Keeping the vine under control helps divert energy to flowering. Also make sure it is in full sun. Root pruning is often recommended to slow growth. With a sharp shovel blade, cut into the soil around the trunk. Stay at least 2 feet away from the trunk to form a circle 4-6 feet across. The vines should also be pruned back by cutting 2 feet or more from the tips. A regular mid-July/August pruning will boost flowering. New vertical growth should be trimmed and suckers at the base of the plant removed.

    Wisteria is one of the most trouble-free plants with no significant pests or diseases.';

(If your lawn fertilizer is washing over into the soil of your wisteria, it will not bloom. Lawn fertilizer will cause pretty green leaves, but no flowers not only on the wisteria but any flower or shrub.)Why won't my wisteria bloom?
With your wisteria trained two light summer pruning should take place during the first three summers to control any wild side shoots that you do not wish to tie in and to reduce any excessive foliage.

If you have had a wisteria for a numbers for years that has failed to flower it is time for some drastic measures. In late autumn after the leaves have fallen you should prune the plant back by 50% removing all the thinner stems, only leaving the main plant structure. Test the soil to see if it is alkaline and if it is add a small dressing of iron sulphate to help counter act this and help turn the soil slightly acid. Finally top dress with some organic matter around the base. In some cases you will find that even this drastic pruning will not result in flowering because the plant has been planted incorrectly in the first place with no organic mater or it had been propagated from a parent plant that was also lacked flowers. The only solution at this stage is to replant with a new plant, which you know to have been propagated from a prolific flowering parent.
Considering it covered you arbor in 3 or 4 years I鈥檓 thinking haven鈥檛 pruned it enough鈥? Prune it heavily this fall and fertilize with super phosphate.

In the spring prune new growth down to 3 pr 4 buds.

Do not fertilize in the spring.

    mid-summer prune to five buds.

    Good luck!

  • What to put on daylillys that won't bloom?

Nomo is right, new plants may take up to three years. They also like full sun. They'll grow in partial to full shade, but won't bloom, or the blossom will be disappointing.

They're not heavy feeders, and there's nothing you can put on them to make them bloom. If they become severely crowded, however, dividing them will result in more bloom. Hope this helps...

Daylily hybridizerWhat to put on daylillys that won't bloom?
Some varieties bloom later than others. Also it may take 2 years after planting for them to bloom. I have had mine 3 years now and they are just now in full bloom - the last 2 years were sparse. There is a saying about plants: ';The first year they sleep, the second year they creep, the third year they leap';What to put on daylillys that won't bloom?
Either they are too young to bloom as the other answers suggest or they aren't getting enough sun.

Or have you been using a high nitrogen fertilizer on them already. High nitrogen encourages green leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

My 12 year old daughter is listening to, Black Hole Sun, Creap, In Bloom, etc? What should I do? Please help?

Well, my 12 year old daughter last in 6th grade would listen to pop, country, and pretty good songs I guess. And over the Summer (her father and I are divorced) her dad moved. She drives about 4 hours every other week traveling from my house one week to her father's the next. I have done some things in the past that maybe weren't the best. But anyways over this Summer she got a hole new taste it seems. I have nothing wrong with that though. She's been playing guitar and everything and loves rock. But she really likes songs like, In Bloom, Creap, Black Hole Sun and everything. She's been wearing bandanas, jeans with (not that many) rips. She also wears black tees and doesn't like bright colors. She also seems even quieter now. Should I be worried? Can you please help me? She was a good kid in 6th grade. Straight As. Athletic. Nice. Are things going wrong? She writes somewhat sad songs. (They're Beautiful though they make me cry). Help Me? P.S. She also listens to Kansas, Bon Jovi, and not just the songs I've listed. God Bless! My 12 year old daughter is listening to, Black Hole Sun, Creap, In Bloom, etc? What should I do? Please help?
She moved on from country and pop to rock? It sounds like her taste is improving at least.

My son is five, and he listens to all kinds of music--White Stripes, Kings of Leon, Pink Floyd, Fountains of Wayne, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, The Cure, Jack Johnson, Phish, Tangerine Dream, Mazzy Star, and Alvin %26amp; the Chipmunks (LOL). He listens to what my husband and I listen to, and when he hears a song he likes, he asks us to add it to his iPod playlist--you should see all the random stuff that's on there. This is the music he knows because it's what he's exposed to.

Changing musical tastes isn't necessarily anything to be concerned with in and of itself. She is growing up, and she and her friends are probably just expanding their musical tastes a bit. She might just be more interested in it because she's being exposed to different things. Be thankful she isn't driving you nuts with Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers.

If her grades are dropping, she doesn't seem interested in things you used to do, she drops her old friends and starts hanging out with a new crowd, or any other significant behavioral changes occur, that might be cause for some concern. But she has just gone through a traumatic loss with her father moving away. It's natural that she should have some feelings about it.

It's probably just a combination of a little teenage angst, missing her father, and wanting to seem a little more grown up.My 12 year old daughter is listening to, Black Hole Sun, Creap, In Bloom, etc? What should I do? Please help?
I love the song ''Black Hole Sun'', by Soundgarden! And I'm a 39 year old mother of 3!! I understand how you might be concerned just ask her, and if that doesn't work consider giving her some space for a while. My 15 year old daughter suddenly turned her music status and started listening to Rock. Grunge and Alternative. But she's still the same bubbly, clumsy, funny girl she's always been!
i was the same way for a few years. don't discourage what she is doing but encourage he to be social and go to school functions. i was a ';goth kid'; for about two and a half years. also during this time i was a cheerleader but extremely shy. actually if you asked anyone in my graduating class they prob don't know who i am but i don't consider that a bad thing
Let her listen to what she wants, don't shelter her. If you've raised your kids with common sense she'll know it's just music and not to let it influence her decisions in life.
well mom welcome to puberty !

you will notice changes for 4 more years.................these fads will come and go...some you will like some you want .....hang in there you will be fine ans so will she,,,,,please REMEMBER ALWAYS TO BE A PARENT FIRST NOT HER FRIEND..lead ,guide and direct and be a positive influence on her life
cheer her up by taking her and her best friends to six flags or somewere were she really likes to go... or give her some money to spend at the mall... let her have some more times with her friends... take her to happy places over all.
FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO IS RELAX AND PRAISE HER FOR HER GREAT GRADES AND DONT HARRASS HER ABOUT HER MUSIC AND THE WAY SHE DRESSES YOU DONT WANT HER GETTING MAD AT YOU THEN START REBELLING
Lol daughter is a lot like me and reminds me of me that's what we do..but evenchuly we will grow out of it...but for I say just let her live her life....=P
    shes probably depressed

so as a teenager, and daughter of divorced parents i can maybe answer this. maybe she's not exactly depressed. it could just be that she's experimenting with different styles, and she likes writing emotional songs. her taste could just be changing. maybe it could be a little depression if the divorce is really affecting her, but maybe not. as long as her grades stay up there, and she still enjoys sports or whatever it is she used to like , i don't think there's a reason to worry. many teens are into the goth emo and scene styles but there's no depression involved.
She Has Turned Rocker no need to worry its just personality at first elementary kids dont know what they want during middle they experiment . she is deciding to dress the way she feel comfortable i write sad songs and poems sometimes also im 14 and i understand what she might be going through dont go and call a priest she is just dressing how she likes and how she feels just try to be a good parent and do not panic simpley let her be herself keep her from drugs guns and gangs dont keeep her from rocking out
Mikey not understand why her taste in music is such a big deal. Music is an individual experience has nothing to do with her maturity she is developing right now.

What , you never did some changing during your maturity phase ?

What does her choice in color have to do with her being a fine young lady ?

Your concentrating on the LEAST important thing right now. Keep being a loving , understanding and supportive parent and all will work out in the end.

You also could be a little more open minded and understanding of her own unique personality...............
well you can always tell her you do not like it and if she continues to do it take all her radio stuff so she can not listen to it and she might just want to be one of them people that dress all in black and be happy that way she might comes home one day with black hair

there is not much you can do she is her own person and it is not like she is out sleeping wiht every tom dick and hairy

i think the best is to let them be if they are not causing any harm
I really doubt its depression, there was a point in my life were I wore black and was quite. Kids are different at home then they are out with friends or school. Schools a pain, btw. Its stressfull.

but if it is a depression, here is what i can say:

I'm a child with parents of my own, so i can tell you what it feels to be depressed. its not the best feeling, in fact it really sucks. But the thing that i believe is the best, you should talk to her. If its not the divorce shes upset about its either school, or shes having troubles with herself. School is stressfull, believe it or not, it seems to get more and more horrible by the minute, and sometimes teenagers just go through emotional confusion. It may last a month even two years. You just need to give her time, talk to her, but dont rush things. Dont ask too many questions. Just let her know she can trust you, and you wont punish her for the things she decides to tell you. Telling your parents personal things is very hard because parents tend to react in a more panic way. They panic and then they punish, if you can show her that she can tell you things and you want to talk NOT punish. she might be willing to give you a friendship and not just motherhood.
It does not sound like depression. She just seems to be very intelligent and creative and rock music is both. That's mostly what I listen to and listened to growing up.

This could also be her way of dealing with your divorce. It impacted just as much, if not more, than it did you.

You said yourself she has good grades and is a good kid, just keep an eye on her, and trust her to make good decisions.

You have to remember at her age she is trying to figure out who she is and who she wants to be.
She's entering a very difficult age:12-14 for a girl adjusting to the changes in her body and hormones. If you're concerned, stay in contact with her dad. Ask him if anything has changed other than his location. Even divorced, you need to stay talking, especially with a girl this age. Find a non-confrontational setting, like riding in the car, and ask her if something is bothering her. Sitting side-by-side, not looking at each other, she may open up better than in a face-to-face situation.

P.S. my 4yr old grandson is into heavy metal (is that the word?) Probably trying to be like his uncle (age 23)
    No.1: Stop freaking out

I do not mean any offence, but jeez lay off the poor girl! shes just experiencing puberty!

Let her listen to what she wants and stop worrying!

Rock music is just music, same as rap, country, pop whatever!

As for the clothes, let her experiment as long as it doesnt turn slutty or too old for her.

Im going through the same and just want to listen and wear what i want! (within reason)
It sounds like a little depression. Kids change and this a faze that she is going through. Let her be right now. Remember we were there once. It is so hard to see these things as adults.

    Algae Bloom in Bore Tank?

I have a bore tank that holds what from a bore well which has a high salinity/mineral content. The water is used only for toilets in my house. I have just discovered that I have an algae bloom in the tank which is causing a terrible odour. Are there any home treatments that I can use to kill the algae? Preferably without causing problems in my septic system.Algae Bloom in Bore Tank?
if you don't want to use chemicals to get rid of the algae, Then best to completely cover the tank so no sunlight is getting in. Algae needs sunlight. Good luckAlgae Bloom in Bore Tank?
Rather than post this type of question here, it might be better to phone a water treatment company specializing in this type of work.

    Look in yellow pages
If you use alcohol it will kill the odor. Not any that comes from a drink just normal alcohol by itself. Also this will kill the algae if you add salt as well. Algae cannot live in liquid containing salt.

Basically, to force a flower on wisteria you must ';stress'; the plant but making ONE CUT to the root system near the base of the plant with a very sharp spade. This will instigate it's natural defense to survive...hence producing a flower. I once had someone tell me they beat it with a baseball bat...which IS NOT a good idea...a barbaric form of stressing it to bloom.

Is anyone having a hard time getting their Knockout Roses to bloom this year?

It almost seems as if something is eating at them??!!Is anyone having a hard time getting their Knockout Roses to bloom this year?
    Do you have thrips?

Adult thrips are tiny, slender insects, 1/25 inch long, variously colored pale yellow, black or brown. They have four long narrow wings fringed with long hairs and very short legs. Their chief target is the rose bloom, especially the red, white, yellow, and other light colored varieties. Flower thrips and tobacco thrips attack rosebuds and disfigure petals. They attack buds in their early stages, working among the unfurled petals. The buds become deformed and fail to open properly, while the damaged petals turn brown and dry. New growth also may be damaged in the same way.

Since thrips burrow deep between the petals, early identification and control is important. Set out yellow sticky traps about 4 weeks after last frost as early warning devices. As soon as you spot thrips on the trap, spray rose buds with insecticidal soap or a pyrethrin/pyrethrum insecticide product as directed on their labels. Commercially available predatory mites, lacewings, ladybugs and beneficial nematodes are effective backups to the soap spray. Thrips prefer a dry environment, so make sure plants are adequately watered.

Here is a link that discusses the identification and control of thrips: http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES鈥?/a>

Do you have leaf skeletonization too?

This could also be an early infestation of Japanese Beetle. They will eat flower petals in addition to the leaf, but not the leaf veins. They love roses and anything in the rose family. Here is a link that discusses Japanese Beetle: http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/bugreview/j鈥?/a>

Anything with carbryl like Sevin can be used to control Japanese Beetle. Just be careful with carbryl, it is deadly to bees!Is anyone having a hard time getting their Knockout Roses to bloom this year?

  • Why dosen't my crepe myrtle tree bloom?

Mine doesn't bloom either. My arborist suggested that I give it a dose of More Bloom, a liquid fertilizer. A least I do have little buds starting to appear. I got the More Bloom at the Home Depot. He said sometimes they just need a little fertilizer to spring them into action. Seems like he was right. Why dosen't my crepe myrtle tree bloom?
One other thing-- Crepe Myrtles bloom on ';new wood';-- this means that if the winter months or early spring you cut them back pretty hard-- they will put out new growth and therefore will bloom. I don't disagree about the need for fertilizer-- they certainly put on a show with fertilizer-- I try to use a pelleted fertilizer-- that is slow release.

good luckWhy dosen't my crepe myrtle tree bloom?
It just doesn't have the energy to bloom. Try to feed it more nutrients through a fertilizer. However, make sure the first number isn't higher than the other numbers or else you may get more blooms than you want and your myrtle will use up too much energy making the flowers.

Would a 2'; ottocinculus be enough to clean a month old algae bloom?

    his name is Otto :D

http://www.mooseman.de/moosewife/pics/Aq鈥?/a>Would a 2'; ottocinculus be enough to clean a month old algae bloom?
Yes given time he will eat all the algae. But he should not be forced to eat just the algae in the tank alone because he will not get enough nutrients from that alone. Go to the store and purchase a bag of algae disks and after about a week start throwing them in 1 every other day or so. Cut back on the feeding then if the algae gets worse.

As always though I have to recommend you use less light in the tank, do more water changes and buy an algae scrub brush and deal with the algae before you buy a fish. Fish are never a good substitute for regular aquarium maintenance practices.

Good LuckWould a 2'; ottocinculus be enough to clean a month old algae bloom?
One oto will not be enough but the algae will keep its belly full. Maybe a group will be able to clear it. If you really want the tank to be free of algae, you have to clean it yourself.

The picture you posted does not like like an ottocinculus. They look like this http://www.erdingtonaquatics.com/tropfis鈥?/a>
Depends on how big the tank is.One other thing is otos should not be kept alone. You should have at least 3 of them in one tank.

Anyone have a foolproof way to get dendrobium orchids to bloom again? I've tried all the recommended methods..?

I hate throwing out supermarket orchids but they NEVER re-bloom even if I follow all the guidelines orchid books prescribe. Well I think I do anyway..what am I missing?Anyone have a foolproof way to get dendrobium orchids to bloom again? I've tried all the recommended methods..?
Each genus of orchid has different requirements for reblooming. Most varieties are very simple to rebloom. Phalaenopsis, Zygopetalum and Odontoglossum require only slight changes in temperature to initiate blooming. Dendrobium, bloom on mature new growth and require a change of fertilizer to a phosphorus-rich, blossom-booster formula, such as 20-20-20. That is not fool proof though. I don't think there is any fool proof method. Let them mature for a year and see what happens. Here is a forum for you.

  • When are sunflowers in bloom in Kansas?

I am interested in fields near Wichita as a backdrop for senior portraits. When are sunflowers in bloom in Kansas?
    Hey Saskyode,

It is tough to be precise since we do not know when they planted. If you knew that, then start looking after 100 days to 120 days. The following is from some research on the topic:

';Sunflowers are something most of us usually think about in August, but with the arrival of the seed catalogs, winter is a good time to start thinking about which ones you might want to grow this coming year.

Most gardeners are familiar with the tall giant sunflowers exhibited at fairs and field days. But there are three or four dozen other varieties, which come in all heights and many colors, to consider. I've tried most of these in Vermont, and here's how the best performed.

First, you need to understand that sunflowers don't all bloom at the same time. In my trials I grouped them according to bloom time. Early means they bloom in late July or early August. The mid-season ones make up the bulk of varieties commercially available, and bloom in mid- August. The late season sunflowers usually flower from late August to early September.

These dates are approximate for USDA hardiness zone 4 in the Champlain Valley. If you live in a warmer zone, move the dates up a week or two. If colder, move a week or two later.

Another consideration is whether the variety branches or not. If it does, these side branches usually produce smaller flowers after producing larger flowers on the main stems. This way bloom season can be extended another couple weeks or more. '; 1

Thanks!Do hydrangeas just bloom once or all summer?
They have just one flush of flowers. After the flowers are spent and dry up, that's it until next year. This is the time when they should be pruned, so you don't accidentally prune next years flower buds by pruning late in the season. The plant sets flowers for next year shortly after the bloom is over. The foliage makes for an interesting show piece however..

...Billy RayDo hydrangeas just bloom once or all summer?
i think that depends on which particular hydrangea it is. i believe most bloom all season though.
Just one time, usually in the middle to latter part of July into the first part of August!

    Happy gardening!
They generally start blooming early in summer or late spring and the blooms can last for months.

Why did my orchid bloom and die?

Orchids are touchy plants. Did you follow the care guidelines provided in terms of water, light, etc.? Was there any pests, insects present on the plant?

There are a variety of reasons why your orchid died. Just keep in mind that you'll probably kill more orchids as you get them and that most of us have killed many before figuring them out.

Do Peony flowers require ants to bloom?

Why do you usually see ants on the bud?Do Peony flowers require ants to bloom?
';The presence of ants on peony blossoms is neither beneficial nor harmful to the plant. Ants are simply attracted to the sugary liquid secreted by flower buds.'; link 1.

';Why are ants always on my peonies?

    They are hungry!

The ants visit your peonies because the flower buds secrete a sweet substance that the ants like to eat. The good news is that the ants are not harmful to your peonies! The ants don't eat the actual plant and contrary to popular belief, the ants are not required to open the buds.

A small trick if you want to cut some of your peony flowers but don't want to bring the ants into the house鈥?Try cutting the flowers before they open and the ants get inside. Cut the flowers when the colour is showing and the bud feels like a marshmallow. At this stage it is easy to remove the ants and the buds will open nicely for you inside within a couple of days.'; Link 2

If you do a google searh for ';ants peony'; you'll find this mentioned on thousnads of sites.Do Peony flowers require ants to bloom?
The ants have probably found some aphids or mites that are producing honeydew (excrement) that the ants are harvesting for their nests. With peonies, the flower bud scales secrete sap that is also rich in carbohydrates that the ants can use as a food source. It was thought that ants were necessary for peony flowers to open. That theory is not true, according to research. Without any ant activity, the flowers still open.
Yes, they do. If you spray your peonies with pesticide to rid them of the ants, they will not bloom. We had two rows of peonies, both pink %26amp; white, in the front of our garden. Beautiful smell, aren't they?
Peonies don't require that ants are a part of their life cycle. However ants are a common user of these decorative and beautiful plants. We always have a small number of ants roaming the buds and stems of our peonies. I think the ants are simply feeding on the sweet exudations that surface on and around the buds. Ants exploit and utilize alot of plants and even other insects, such as aphid populations that the ants will manage and farm on the leaves and stems of all sorts of plants and trees such as appletrees, cherrietrees and herbs like catnip. Most insects that aid plants in fruit production and visit during flowering are pollinators, taking pollen from one flower pistol to another accomplishing cross pollination and the mixing of the genes, these critters are generally fliers like bees and other particular species of flies and butterflies, not crawlers like ants.
PAEONIA peony... once and for all, there is no horticultural relationship whatever between ants (or any other insect ) and the peony and it bloom. Period! End of story! Void another myth! An ant free peony will bloom just as well as an ant free peony. Old wives tale from the days when we thought the earth was flat as Jimmy Carter's personality. they do not need to be pollinated be wind, bees, a brother or sister plant living up-wind, nor man or beast. I made the mistake of suggesting just such a relationship to a prof of parasitology during my post graduate studies. he became so angry he chased me from the building. he wouldn't even acknowledge i was a me member of his class for many months after. when he did, he addressed me as ';mr peony';. it was only when i completed a six month, field study on the subject (on my own time) and filled my 118 page research study with the head of the plant science dept, was the sir name peony dropped from his vocabulary. the dear professor had been dealing with that very myth for over thirty years. i just happened to bring the matter up on the very day ...';he could stanz zit no more!'; I taught plant science for several years. every year there was at least one mr peony in every class. old myths seem never to die. so please help put this one to rest. ANTS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH CAUSING A PEONY TO BLOOM! PERIOD! class dismissed.

Can you cut Holly Hocks down after they bloom?

Will they come back? They look so ugly with just the seed pods hanging on. Thanks, :) ArumCan you cut Holly Hocks down after they bloom?
Yes they will come back next year but this type of plant is called a biannual which means that the parent plant won't last but a few years before dieing off. If you let the seeds mature and fall to the ground next year you'll have lots of small plants that will take the place of the parent plant. This is one of my favorites. I use to make money on them by potting the small plants up and taking them to a local nursery for sale or trade. This is an old world plant that most people don't even mess with anymore. It's good to here some folks still have them. Keep them going, it's a gift. Can you cut Holly Hocks down after they bloom?
Yes they will come back. But you should let them send the energy back to the roots first. Also the seeds may not have time to mature.

Did the Chrysylis bring the bloom or the bloom bring the Chryslis?

the Chrysalis brings the bloom, the bloom brings the butterfly and the butterfly brings the Chrysalis...

(is the second Chrysalis cuter than the first? lol..)

:)Did the Chrysylis bring the bloom or the bloom bring the Chryslis?
Interdependent upon each other. A few days ago, I am confused by a question which has some kinda similarity with yours. It is that does the society force people cruelly or the people turn the society cruelly? Woo, tell me the answer.Did the Chrysylis bring the bloom or the bloom bring the Chryslis?
(Chrysylis, Chryslis, or Chrysalis?) It's a good question and one befitting the stature of a Native American. No doubt, you know, there is a perfect harmony and interconnected order in the natural world in which the butterfly, the honeybee, and the flowering plants mutually benefit from and are interdependent upon. Therefore, the circle (or cycle) can not be broken.
If the blooms were not nearby the chrysylis would have been started somewhere else.

But as it goes through its growth it does form into a bloom.

After my orchid drops all blooms do I cut back the bloom stalk?

NO! don't do it,it's tempting but every once in awhile you can get another bloom spike from the shoot, if the shoot starts to die back cut to the nearest green growth and apply a basic orchid fertilizer, preferably a liquid form. this is not every time but its worth it to try. only cut them stem back when it has fully turned brown and died off.

What kind of plant is this...first bloom this year?

I have a plant that is just beautiful in front of my house, definitely a shade plant....it has been there for years, and this spring I noticed a large purple bud on it....it finally bloomed today, and I have to know what kind of plant it is...I want more now! The flower is breathtaking! Here's a pic: http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p189/鈥?/a>

Thanks! What kind of plant is this...first bloom this year?
Hi, yes it's a beautiful iris! Just want to correct some info given in the last post - Irises grow from rhizomes, not bulbs... A rhizome is actually an underground stem which pops out new roots and shoots farther and farther from the origional rhizome every year, which is why you have to divide them every 2 to 3 years. There are a tons of different types of irises, but my favorite are the type that bloom in spring AND fall since the flowers only last a short while. Welcome to the wonderful world of irises...!!

Just realized that if it hasn't bloomed in a few years it could be because it needs to be divided... you can dig them up (in the fall would be ideal) and break them apart making sure you have a node, which is where your bud will come from and some roots. Some people let them sit out a day to let the broken edge harden up a bit and then plant them back in the ground, but I don't bother and they've always done just fine for me. They like to have the top of the rhizome sticking up above the soil a bit, as well. Goodluck! What kind of plant is this...first bloom this year?
this is a irish plant ;it excepts most soil ,will grow most any where .i find it grows best when not covered to much with dirt ,it dosent like to be deep in ground;this plant will last for years .hard to kill .hope this helps thank you craftymomma1963ayahoo.com
    It's beautiful!

It's a bearded Iris. The Iris is in the Tulip family which means it is grown from a ';bulb';. Get to your local nursery right now and they be on sale.

Bulbs are usually planted in the fall and bloom the following spring. The Iris if planted early enough in the spring will bloom through the summer. They are very easy to grow.
    iris
    yep. Bearded iris.
It's a bearded iris. They bloom for a short time in the spring and are available in lots of colors. They're easy to grow, but you have to watch out for iris borers which chew their way down the leaf and into the rhizome. My favorite ones are the silver white ones my Grandfather grew back in the 50s - I still have a few planted in the flower bed.

  • Why won't my myrtle tree bloom?

We had it planted last year and it bloomed beautifully throughout the summer and into the fall. This year, it is already July and the tree has not bloomed.

Why and How can we make it bloom again? Why won't my myrtle tree bloom?
Crepes bloom on new growth and cuttings will root in water. They prefer full sun, heavy feeders, try bloom booster (miracle gro)Why won't my myrtle tree bloom?
Make sure the poor-blooming trees are not planted too deep and give them at least one application of organic fertilizer a year. Organic gardeners make the first major fertilizer application very early in the year. The time is now. The rate is 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet of garden area.

PRUNING Plants usually have a specific type of branch on which flowers occur. Crape myrtles flower on new wood: the branches that have grown since spring.

Until a plant is mature and well-established, it will be barren in spring.

What do I do with an Arizona chtistmas cactus to get it to bloom?

Piss on it it needs water tooWhat do I do with an Arizona chtistmas cactus to get it to bloom?
wait till Christmas, and keep it watered, but not over watered. What do I do with an Arizona chtistmas cactus to get it to bloom?
I have a beautiful christmas cactus but mine does not stat blooming for about another month. Each year I piick off the old blooms when they die.
For it to develop buds and give the desired bloom, this plant requires cool temperatures in the fall. At 50 to 55掳 F night temperatures, the flower buds will form regardless of day length. At 60 to 65掳 F night temperatures for buds to form the plant must be protected from any amount of artificial light at night from September to November. Flower buds seldom form at night temperatures above 70掳 F. After the flower buds are well developed, they will bloom at normal room temperature.

In order to insure lots of flowers, I have found the easiest thing to do is to place the plant outdoors during the fall so it will be exposed to cooler temperatures. Outdoors, place the plant in a lightly shady area. You may need to provide protection from high winds or heavy rain while the plant is outdoors or temporarily bring the plant indoors during stormy weather. But most importantly, do not leave your plant outside when a frost or freeze is expected. I made that mistake once and lost a nice Christmas cactus as a result. They won鈥檛 survive cold winter weather.

If you have to keep your Christmas cactus indoors exposed to normal room temperature, you can force flower buds by providing the correct amount of dark period. If the night temperature is between 55 to 70掳 F, your cactus will need thirteen hours of uninterrupted darkness per day to set buds. But if you keep your house toasty at night (temperatures between 70 to 85掳 F), your cactus will require more darkness 鈥?about fifteen hours in every twenty-four.

To provide this extra long night treatment you can place your plant in a closet or underneath a box, large bag, etc. But it鈥檚 important to make sure the closet or covering is lightproof. Any interruption in this dark treatment may result in poor flower bud initiation for the holidays. You would not want to place the plant in a closet that is opened frequently, allowing light to the plant. On the other hand, it鈥檚 also important to not leave the plant covered or in the closet constantly. It will need some light during each twenty-four hour period. You鈥檙e just trying to consistently provide a longer night period in order to force flower buds to form.

You鈥檒l probably agree that it鈥檚 easier to leave the plant outside during the fall as compared to providing the extended dark treatment to encourage an abundance of flowers.

Temperature control and short day treatment should be continued until buds are well developed 鈥?for six to nine weeks. Temperatures above 90掳 F may cause the flower buds to drop off the plant.

You may want to clip and save this column so you鈥檒l know how to make the Christmas cactus you received this year bloom again next year and for years to come.

I planted 7 Viburnum Opulus Roseum ( sterile Common Snowballs) . they are planted in along my property , and have filtered sunlight. They are about 4 feet tall now.

I live in a warm temperate area and my Viburnum Opulus Roseum is planted in a quite shaded area and they flower well. They flower in summer not spring. Which is the best time for seeds to be planted for flowers to bloom in spring?

All three seasons (spring, summer and fall) are wildflower planting times, depending on your region, your weather, and the way you want to approach establishing your meadow. No matter when or where you plant, site preparation is roughly the same. But the first consideration is not the season; it's your climate. (zone map link below)

Fall and spring planting can be equally successful with wildflowers, and each season has its devoted fans for several reasons.

Many people like to say ';Nature plants wildflowers in the fall.'; and that is basically true. All season long, flowers in the wild are blooming, then ';going to seed';, which means dropping their seeds to propagate their individual species. For example, a very successful species such as Black-eyed Susan blooms in mid-summer, and then drops a large number of seeds from each dying flower in late summer. If weather cooperates, these seeds may sprout before winter. If it is dry and hostile for the seeds, they will simply lay there through the winter and sprout in spring.

It is best to plant fall flower bulb now so in spring you will have a rainbow of beautiful flowers.

My grandmother had beautiful spring flowers and my favorite are Hyacinths. They are beautiful and they smell so good.

You should go bulb shopping and don't forget the crucus bulbs...Always the first ones up and bloomings.Which is the best time for seeds to be planted for flowers to bloom in spring?

I agree 100% with Sandy F - I do the same thing - I mow them over when they fall and shrivle up.
They won't flower again but will die back. Cut off the dead leaves and cover with a 2 inch thick mulch. They'll be back stronger the following year.

Yeah, it's starting to bolt. You can cut out those flower stalks to get it to produce more leaf. I always let a couple go, where I am in S. California they will come up again in spring as volunteers. Super easy plant. Those really lacey leaves on the bolting plants are still good for cooking by the way, and fresh coriander seed is much better than the old stuff sold in most markets. I also use the roots for thai cooking. An all around use full plant. My cilantro plant is start to bloom little white flowers!! Is this normal? Should I cut them?
Cilantro is hard to grow. Mine always does that. When it blooms there is not much you can do. Use the leaves quickly. The seeds that follow the blooms are actually coriander, a different spice. If you like coriander then just let it bloom and use the seeds.

None of my pepper plants have bloomed! A few leaves are falling off they look fairly healthy used Osmocoat?

Answer: probably too much N and too little P.

If the Osmocot you used had too much Nitrogen and too little Phosphorous, your plant is continuing to grow in ';vegetative'; mode. Most flowering and fruiting fertilizers will have very little Nitrogen with more Phosphorous and a balanced Potassium analysis.

    Plants need phosphorous to flower.

Is this a synthesis question? {From blooms} why do you think Lizzy's parents were arguing?

It depends on whether the information is given in the story or whether you have to work it out from clues (written or pictorial).

If there is a sentence something like: ';Lizzy's parents always argued over who would pick her up.'; Then the student doesn't have to synthesise anything to work out the answer.

I don't know what state (growing zone) you are in, but most gardens are about to go to sleep for the fall and winter. Unless you live in a very warm state such as southern Calif. or Florida, I'm sure your wonderful jasmine will soon loose it's flowers and close down for the winter.

If it is growing in a pot, you can keep it going through the winter by bringing it in the house and setting it in a south facing window. Don't forget to water it ever so often, it will need water. Stick your finger down into the soil about two inches and see if it feels dry. You can do this now too while it is outside.

Curious, as a new gardener and homeowner. Why would you not want them to flower. I know it is a silly question, but, hey, you gotta learn somewhere. How does this benefit the tree?

    Sorry, what a horrible answer.
use an ax to chop them down.
There are chemicals that will keep them from setting fruit. I can't at the moment think of any product names, so I defer to ';A Well Lit Gardner';. I know that FERTI-LOME makes a product.

The product actually destroys the flower, so that it cannot set fruit. You have to apply it topically over the flowers while in bloom. If you can't spray it all, you won't be able to curtail the fruit set completely.

That being said, do you even want the tree? The main purpose of crab apple are the beautiful flowers. If the fruit is a major turn off, you might want to replace the tree with a different flowering tree, that produces less or no fruit. Look at some of the flowering cherries (Prunus) or dogwoods (Cornus) for options.

When can I transplant a bloomed tulip?

The best time to move them is six weeks after they have bloomed, or, if you can remember where they are, in the fall. Use a garden fork to dig them up, taking care not to stab the bulbs. Make sure the new location is sunny and well drained. Then fork over the soil, adding compost or manure, and replant the bulbs. Add bloom fertilizer to the soil to help them on their way. When can I transplant a bloomed tulip?

Your tulip bloomed indoors right? If you live in a warm place, you could do it now. If you expect frost soon - don't do it. You know the tulip will only be in bloom for a short time. I went to Holland a few years ago and found the people plant their bulbs in individual pots. They plant the entire pot in the spring and dig up the pot when the blooms are over and plant something else, saving the potted blub for next year in a cold place.

    Any suggestions?

(Please post if you have something helpful.)Roses. What's the best plant food to induce beautiful blooms?
The thing that is most important to an indoor rose plant is light. Ideally, if you could have the light level the same as it would be outside, that would be great. Roses love lots of light. A south window would be best. I'm not sure what the optimum temperature for roses is (probably a little cooler than room temperature). Also, the right amount of moisture is very important. Too much and you'll run into things like root rot due to soggy media conditions. The best fertilizer in the world would do nothing without the other things also being achieved.

I've heard bonemeal is good for roses... but truthfully, I think any fertilizer that you can buy in a garden center or Home Depot or wherever that says for flowering plants would work quite well. In fact, some fertilizers even give special instructions for roses.Roses. What's the best plant food to induce beautiful blooms?
I plant %26amp; grow roses to. I had problems with my roses dying and getting black spots on the leaves. Roses love acid. Put your tea bags around the rose on top of the soil and water it so the tea bags stay a little wet and teh roses bush can get teh acid also use banana peels, egg shells. If u get black spots on your leaves mix water with a spoonful of dawn dish deregent in a spray bottle and spary at dusk dark (not when the sun is out will kill the bush). It works here for me in North Carolina. Good luck.

  • My tomatoes are blooming but fruit is not setting on. Someone suggested epsom salts. Any suggestions?

There are some moon phases that each plant needs to be planted in to get the best results. If the tomatos were not planted in the proper moon phase, the tomatoe plant will not make tomatoes. Feed and seed stores usually have copies of the Farmers Almanac that has the correct planting dates for each plant in it- They are usually free to anyone that wishes to have one.My tomatoes are blooming but fruit is not setting on. Someone suggested epsom salts. Any suggestions?
Yes. I do not recommend putting epsom salts on your tomato plants... that seems more likely to kill them than pollinate them!

I would first see if the plants are healthy, if they are yellow-looking they may have trouble setting fruits because they are deficient in nutrients like phosphorus or trace minerals. I am going to go out on a limb here and assume that your plants are perfectly healthy other than not setting fruit after they flower.

In that case, it sounds like you have a pollination problem, not a plant health issue. Tomatoes, like many plants in the Solanaceae family (includes peppers, eggplant, potatoes, nightshade, tobacco, and others) are what you call buzz pollinated. That is, it takes a bee buzzing at the flower to make the pollen come out and pollinate it so it will begin making a fruit (tomatoes are botanically considered a fruit). If for some reason there isn't a healthy bee population in the area or they just haven't yet found your garden yet lack of pollination could be your problem. If you happen to be growing your tomatoes in a greenhouse, try leaving a door or window open for a while.

My guess is that eventually the bees will find your flowers and pollinate them. If you are feeling adventurous, you can try to pollinate them yourself using a tuning fork. It needs to be in the right key, I think it is ';A'; but I am not sure.

There could be any number of reasons:

I grow lots of tomatoes in Boxes see http://johnnae.com/earthbox.aspx for my Family page on our gardening......

    Now to my suggestions:

    1) Lack of pollination

    2) Lack of calcium..yep they need it you can buy sparys

    3) night temps too low (below 60 ) or too hot (above 80)

These ae the most common, but the wrong soil Ph could also cause the problem, may need to add lime. I use the peletize type.

What makes tomatoe blooms fall off prematurely?

My tomatoes are blooming and the blooms are falling off the vine without making fruit. What makes tomatoe blooms fall off prematurely?
Tomatoes like an even supply of water through the season--and if their water supply gets turned off and on all the time, they'll develop problems. I can't emphasize enough the need for an even water supply.

Like most other vegetables in the garden, tomatoes need at least 1 inch of rain or irrigation water per week for steady growth. In the hotter, dryer parts of the country, their needs go up to 2 inches of water per week during the summer months.

If you're curious about what an inch of water measures out to .... well, it's about 60 gallons for each 100 square feet of garden. So if you ever have to water by the bucket brigade, that's something to bear in mind.

There are many clever ways of watering tomatoes. One is to cut the top from some gallon-size cans, punch very small holes in the bottoms, and set them in the ground with only about 1 inch of the can showing above the surface. Use one can near (or between) each tomato plant and fill it two or three times per week--or more often if needed. When the plants start fruiting (fruits are the size of a quarter), add one or two teaspoons of a complete fertilizer, such as 5-10-10, to each can once a week for a sidedressing. You can use milk jugs in place of cans.

    Always follow these watering guidelines:

Water thoroughly to encourage tomato roots to seek water and nutrients deep in the soil. With an extensive, deep root system plants hold up better in dry periods. When watering, soak the soil to a depth of at least 6 to 8 inches. A thorough soaking every 4 or 5 days on light, sandy soils and every 7 to 10 days on heavy soils is a good general guide for irrigating tomatoes in the absence of rain.

Water only when your plants need it. Tomatoes like moisture, but overwatering is harmful. Overwatering not only wastes water but also prevents the roots from getting air. If your plants look wilted on a hot summer afternoon, that's normal. They will usually perk up overnight. If plants are wilted in the morning, don't wait -- water them!

Watering early in the day reduces evaporation loss and allows plant foliage to dry quickly. Wet foliage overnight may help trigger some diseases. Furrow irrigation, drip irrigation, or soaker hoses deliver water right at the soil surface and not on the leaves, so you can water most anytime. Avoid watering at mid-day, because evaporation losses are highest at this time.

Use mulch to help retain moisture in the soil. Mulches reduce the fluctuation of soil moisture and that helps the crop enormously. But, remember, don't apply mulch until after the transplants have been going for 5 to 6 weeks. If mulch is applied too early, it will keep the soil cooler and plant growth will be slowed. However, when the soil is warm and plants have begun to grow, apply mulch and it will keep the soil cool during the summer and will also retain moisture.

COMMON TOMATO PROBLEMS CAUSED BY ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

    Stop Blossom-End Rot

Too many fruits of tomato and bell pepper along with eggplant and watermelon grown in home gardens are lost each year to a condition called blossom-end rot. It is sad to see blossom rot erupt in a tomato row because you can't help the tomato once it's started. Blossom-end rot is a disorder found on the fruit near the blossom end and first appears as a darkened, sunken, leathery scar. This condition usually causes the fruit to ripen prematurely and makes it worthless.

Blossom-end rot can be caused by several factors and the severity of this condition can be compounded when two or more of these factors interact with each other. It is known that inadequate calcium levels in the fruit can cause this condition and a low soil calcium level, in combination with inadequate soil moisture, can compound the situation. Severely pruned tomato plants are more prone to develop blossom-end rot than unpruned plants. In order to control blossom-end rot, the home gardener will need to take several steps and one needs to start early, even before the crop is planted, if this condition is to be prevented.

    Steps to control blossom-end rot:

    1. Soil test early in the spring and apply dolomitic lime if needed. This should be done several weeks before planting.

    2. In gardens where this condition has been severe in past seasons, also broadcast 5 lbs. of dolomitic lime per 100 square feet just before planting and plow the ground 6 to 8 inches deep.

    3. Mulch plants with black plastic or organic mulch.

    4. Apply irrigation water to keep soil uniformly moist throughout season.

    5. A calcium spray, first applied when fruits are first visible can help prevent this disorder. Mix 4 tablespoons of calcium chloride per gallon of water. Spray plants until solution begins to run off the leaves. Three applications are recommended at 7 day intervals. Also, you can mix 2 tablespoons to a gallon of water and spray 2 or 3 times a week. This procedure will help the problem. Blossom rot stop (pre-mixed) chemicals are also available.

Cracking. Tomatoes can start to crack during warm, rainy periods, especially if rains follow a dry period. The tomatoes simply expand too fast and the flesh is exposed through the skin. Some varieties are resistant to cracking. Again, the best way to avoid the problem is to keep the moisture supply as even as possible throughout the season.

Catfacing. This is another kind of cracking or scarring in which tomatoes develop unusual swelling and streaks of scar tissue. This is not a disease. It is caused by abnormal development of the pistil (ovary from which the tomato develops) of the tomato flower at blossom time. Cool weather is believed to cause the flower abnormality.

High and Low Temperatures Affect Tomato Blooms. During some years many of the early-season as well as mid-season blossoms will simply fall off. When night temperatures fall below 55 F the tomato bloom pollen can be killed completely or so much is killed that complete pollination does not occur and misshapen, small tomatoes are produced. Many times this condition early in the season will only occur on the first one or two hands of tomatoes. High temperatures above 90F can also cause pollen damage but the location of damage from high temperatures is noticed on those blooms that were open at the time the high temperature occurred. The early maturing tomato varieties such as Spring Giant, Springset and Early Girl do not seem to be as susceptible to cold temperatures as do the main season tomatoes. Patio tomatoes such as Small Fry and Tumblin Tom likewise seem to tolerate lower temperatures. This explains why it is difficult to get a summer-long crop of tomatoes in the hot sections of the South.

Sunscald. This occurs when green or ripening tomatoes get too much exposure to the hot sun. At first, a yellowish-white patch appears on the side of the tomato facing the sun. The area gets larger as the fruit ripens and becomes grayish-white. Some varieties develop a lot of foliage and so are good in hot, sunny areas of the country. To guard against sunscald, be careful not to over prune plants and remove all their shade. You can also grow them in cages where they will develop lots of protective foliage.

Although these common problems make tomatoes look ugly, the fruits are safe to eat. Just cut away the affected part and enjoy the rest. What makes tomatoe blooms fall off prematurely?
Blossoms probably not fertilizing. Try flicking each blossom a couple of times with your finger. Works for me every year. Report Abuse
