After poppies are done blooming, can you cut them down to the ground?

This would depend on the type of Poppies that you have. If you have the annual type like the orange California Poppy then yes they are through after blooming because they are an annual. If however, you have the Oriental Poppy that are generally in the red color ranges with the black centers, these are perennials and you would not want to cut down the leaves now. They are using the nutrients and energy from the leaves to help with next seasons growth. The leaves will die down naturally later in the summer and you will see more leaves start to appear later in the fall. You should mulch in the fall to help with next springs plants. You can cut off the seed head stalks without damaging the plant. If I were you I would not mess with cutting the plant back. You could however plant some other type of plant that would be an annual around the Poppy to help conceal it. They are a weed, when you think they are gone they will rear there ugly head. I planted some 2 years ago and they are still popping up everywhere. I think thats why they call them poppiesAfter poppies are done blooming, can you cut them down to the ground?
if you leave them for a while they will reseed themselves,then pull them up from the roots they are dead now ,or you can pulloff the seed pods first then dry them out and reseed from there
I have many orange poppies in my perennial garden. When the poppies blossum, usually the blossum only lasts one day and then the wind blows the soft pedals off, leaving this naked tall stem. I then reach down to the bottom of the stem, to the base and pinch the stem off with my fingers. (or use scissors) A new shoot will form again and the poppy will re-blossum. If you do this to your poppies, they will continue to form blossums all summer long from June - October. Poppies re-seed themselves and next spring you will see new ones growing in your garden. Just thin out the unwanted ones.

Yes, you sure can. Besides, poppies aren't very pretty once their bloom has died. Be sure to collect the seeds though and you can rebroadcast them in your garden for next season. Happy poppy pulling :)
