What are some good flowers to plant that will bloom in the spring, in Washington State?

I just moved to a house with a bare yard in Spokane Washington (state). I have lived in apartments my whole life and have never done any gardening what so ever. I wanted to know what plants/flowers i could plant so that they come out during spring. Which are your favorites? I have a rectangular shaped yard and would like to border the inside of the fence that separates it from the neighbors with a full but short big leafed plant. Then add some colorfull flowers in between or in front of it :) Any ideas would help, thank you.What are some good flowers to plant that will bloom in the spring, in Washington State?
Hosta's are good for a broad leaf plant and are very easy to care for. As for the flowers, daffodils and tulips are great early varieties of flowers that require little care. Don't forget to consider if you want flowers blooming at other times of the year as well.
