Hi, yes it's a beautiful iris! Just want to correct some info given in the last post - Irises grow from rhizomes, not bulbs... A rhizome is actually an underground stem which pops out new roots and shoots farther and farther from the origional rhizome every year, which is why you have to divide them every 2 to 3 years. There are a tons of different types of irises, but my favorite are the type that bloom in spring AND fall since the flowers only last a short while. Welcome to the wonderful world of irises...!!

Just realized that if it hasn't bloomed in a few years it could be because it needs to be divided... you can dig them up (in the fall would be ideal) and break them apart making sure you have a node, which is where your bud will come from and some roots. Some people let them sit out a day to let the broken edge harden up a bit and then plant them back in the ground, but I don't bother and they've always done just fine for me. They like to have the top of the rhizome sticking up above the soil a bit, as well. Goodluck! What kind of plant is this...first bloom this year?

It's a bearded Iris. The Iris is in the Tulip family which means it is grown from a ';bulb';. Get to your local nursery right now and they be on sale.

Bulbs are usually planted in the fall and bloom the following spring. The Iris if planted early enough in the spring will bloom through the summer. They are very easy to grow.
iris
yep. Bearded iris.
It's a bearded iris. They bloom for a short time in the spring and are available in lots of colors. They're easy to grow, but you have to watch out for iris borers which chew their way down the leaf and into the rhizome. My favorite ones are the silver white ones my Grandfather grew back in the 50s - I still have a few planted in the flower bed.
