Curious, as a new gardener and homeowner. Why would you not want them to flower. I know it is a silly question, but, hey, you gotta learn somewhere. How does this benefit the tree?

use an ax to chop them down.
There are chemicals that will keep them from setting fruit. I can't at the moment think of any product names, so I defer to ';A Well Lit Gardner';. I know that FERTI-LOME makes a product.





The product actually destroys the flower, so that it cannot set fruit. You have to apply it topically over the flowers while in bloom. If you can't spray it all, you won't be able to curtail the fruit set completely.





That being said, do you even want the tree? The main purpose of crab apple are the beautiful flowers. If the fruit is a major turn off, you might want to replace the tree with a different flowering tree, that produces less or no fruit. Look at some of the flowering cherries (Prunus) or dogwoods (Cornus) for options.
